There is no better way for travellers to really experience a destination than to take their lead from the locals.

That’s where a recent resource consolidated by Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) comes in. The ‘Hello Hong Kong – My Best Picks – Most Liked Hong Kong Experiences’ is full of recommendations by Hong Kong’s residents.

For travel agents, this provides an easy guide on how to match the destination’s many experiences with their clients’ tastes and preferences.

The Hong Kong Best Picks collates the choices of 30,000 locals, each recommending 15 most-liked experiences, ranging from local food to downtown and countryside views, plus various ‘out of the box’ recommendations.

Culinary enthusiasts, for example, will be interested to know that Dim Sum tops the ‘foodie pleasure’ list and is widely chosen as the number one choice.

Right behind this however is Hong Kong-style milk tea, something different for many visitors to the destination. Egg Tart, Bubble Waffle and Wonton Noodles complete the top five list.

Hong Kong’s great outdoors are just a stone’s throw from downtown and the locals’ favourite in this category is Tai O, one of the oldest fishing villages in Hong Kong and often referred to the ‘Venice of the East’.

For clients seeking an amazing vista rather than an urban oasis, the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui is regarded as the best place to soak up the scenery of Victoria Harbour.

M+ and Palace Museum are favourites as art and cultural landmarks, while the Star Ferry is tops with locals when it comes to a leisurely harbour tour.

The Peak is the number one ‘must-visit checkpoint’. Other personal favourites for visitors to see and do while in Hong Kong include riding a traditional tram or double decker bus, exploring the Hong Kong Museum of Arts or visiting one of the wet markets, where they can experience the lively and local side of the city.

Cycling trails also rate highly, including the Tseung Kwan O Cross Bridge and various waterfront promenades.
