Hong Kong's Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay Discovery Bay

Lantau Island provides clients with many opportunities to take interesting walks and explore some 50 towns and villages, each with their own appeal. New Zealanders will particularly enjoy the resort town of Discovery Bay, offering nature, outdoor adventures and fine restaurants only a 25-minute ferry ride from the heart of the city.

The easy access from Hong Kong International Airport, the extensive retail offerings at Tung Chung, and the family theme park of Hong Kong Disneyland have kept Discovery Bay top of mind with both visitors and locals since was formed in
the 1980s.

Connecting these major sites are trails that twist and turn over rolling hills, traversing through heritage sites, white-sand beaches and established villages. Walking through the relaxing route that links the coastal town of Mui Wo and Discovery Bay is one way to explore this side of the island. The hike is suitable for all fitness levels.

Right beside Mui Wo Ferry Pier, offering local seafood dishes and hearty bowls of noodles, is the cooked food market. Here visitors will find restaurants serving international offerings from Turkish and Middle Eastern to Italian cuisines.

One highlight close by is the Monastery of Our Lady of Joy Abbey. This was founded in the 1950s by the Trappists.

From here, visitors can reach the neighbourhood of Discovery Bay by taking the pathway that passes a number of villages along the bay of Nim Shue Wan.

Travel agents can’t go wrong recommending a barefoot stroll along Tai Pak Beach’s 400-metre-long stretch of soft white sand. This was the city’s first man-made private beach, created in the 1980s with sand imported from Mainland China.

Clients will also find Hong Kong’s largest beach playground here. Highlights include a mini zipline, as well as attractions such as slides and swings, a rope bridge, and a number of climbing frames and obstacles.

An extra 30-minute walk along Discovery Bay Road takes visitors to Central Park, the largest public park in Discovery Bay. Here they will find ponds, streams and waterfalls plus tree-lined paths.
