Aviation veteran Ian Herald says it didn’t take long after he joined the travel industry to start having experiences he still fondly remembers 48 years later.

At an intimate gathering to mark his retirement in the Glass Goose, Auckland, Herald recalled joining Stars Travel as an office junior and relatively quickly getting onto an SQ famil to Singapore – his first offshore trip. There was also a Continental (not the only now-departed airline he recalls) to Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

After leaving Stars, Herald worked for Japan Air Lines, then TWA and (briefly) Mt Cook before heading to London and picking up a job with Cathay Pacific.

‘When I got back I was offered a part-time role with the airline by Dave Figgins
– I was there for about 29 years.’

Herald’s career then moved on to Philippine Airlines and (after a Covid disruption) Malayasia Airlines.

He retires leaving what is now a different world. ‘There is certainly a new way of doing things.’

Herald says he now intends to ‘chill out with some hobbies and some overseas travel’.
