Experiencing Eastern & Oriental

Kate Couling and Davina Bennetto of World Journeys took to the tracks recently aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, a Belmond train.

Their four-day Wild Malaysia itinerary from Singapore travelled to the wildlife of Taman Negara National Park and the cultural melting pot of Penang Island.
This train started life as the Silver Star, running overnight services between Auckland and Wellington in the 1970s. Bought by Eastern & Oriental Express, the train was substantially redesigned.

Couling describes the cabins as ‘well considered, lots of polished cherrywood and elm panelling, and lush carpets.’
Dining onboard was a highlight, with multi-course gourmet meals, cocktails and excellent service. Off-train excursions included an e-bike ride to the limestone caves of Merapoh.

‘Our guides were charming, helpful, knowledgeable and one was a caving expert who also showed us medicinal uses for some of the plants,’ says Couling.
Others opted for walks through the ancient forest and its canopy. Bennetto experienced a Malaysian cooking class in Penang, while Couling set out on an art tour by Vespa.

‘From the warmth and friendly service from the crew to the incredible food and excursions – this is a stunning journey,’ says Bennetto. Priced from US$4,650 per person share twin in a Pullman Cabin, it includes three-nights’ luxury cabin accommodation, all meals and most beverages onboard, transfers to/from Singapore hotel, excursions, and 24-hour steward service. Gratuities and premium beverages are additional.
