Burkes Pass, a small town with a big story Burkes Pass, a small town with a big story

Small town stories

The stories behind New Zealand’s small towns, with insights in into the history and communities of the area, add an extra dimension to many of Pacific Jane’s itineraries, says the company’s founder, Sarah-Jane Lee.

One tour being promoted to travel agents now is Burkes Pass, where the local cemetery has several claims to fame – jet boat inventor Sir William Hamilton is buried there for example.

Burkes Pass is included in Pacific Jane’s Goldfields Magic and Tiny Places – Big Stories tours.

Clients learn about musterers, shepherds and Maori travellers who left their mark on the landscape. The pass was once a passageway for pre-Euorpean Maori to the MacKenzie district and its plentiful supply of birdlife and eels in the streams.

Highlights for clients visiting the region with Pacific Jane include a heritage walk visiting the oldest Union Church in New Zealand, St Patrick’s; Three Creek Gallery, a collectables and memorabilia gift shop; a kids scavenger hunt created by Burkes Pass Heritage Trust; plus the cemetery with its stories of settlers’ lives.

Pacific Jane offers wholesale rates for retail stores.
