Travelwise Holidays, a New Zealand-based tour operator dedicated to the 60-plus demographic will be increasing its profile among travel agents this year.

‘We’re preparing our systems now to engage the trade in a meaningful way and we will be releasing more details soon,’ says general manager Andrew Harrison.

The TAANZ bonded operator is in its 30th year of trading, including the past two and half years as a stand-alone company in the Total Travel Group with directors Stu McKay and Andrew Parke.

Harrison says Travelwise Holidays is now operating about 40 tours a year around the globe, with Japan currently being on the ‘hot list’ when it comes to appeal.

‘We’ve got a full Japan tour around the cherry blossom season and we are adding another one to the schedule. Japan is a real star destination at the moment.

‘However, we’ve also seen huge demand for our Xmas tours to perennial favourites like Hanmer Springs, Norfolk Island and the Chatham Islands. We find these are popular not only with couples but also solo travellers.’

He says when it comes to international destinations there is also strong interest in Canada and Southern Africa (an itinerary taking in Botswana, Victoria Falls and the highlights of South Africa).

‘We do a lot in Australia and we’ve got some flop and drop type itineraries in places like Rarotonga and Samoa. At the other end of the scale we’ve also got an Antarctic trip scheduled for 25 February.’

Harrison says the operator’s point of difference is its absolute focus on the mature traveller.

‘Our customers really want to get and do things but they also like to know they are being well looked after and they won’t be hit with hidden charges. In greater Auckland we pick up or travellers from their home or lifestyle village – that’s a big selling point.

‘We procure coaches that kneel down for easy access, hotels with walk-in showers and tour leaders who are knowledgeable and well trained, including in first aid.’

He says the company’s guides include travel agency principals, ex-cruise and airline crew members and people who also contract to global tour operators.’

‘One example is David Libeau, an industry veteran who receives rave reviews from our guests.’
