Sunshine and stars in QLD hinterland

Magical Dome at Petrichor Estate Magical Dome at Petrichor Estate

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland has been confirmed as Queensland’s first Dark Sky Reserve, and is one of the most accessible places in Australia to stargaze.

The Blackall Range – where much of the Dark Sky Reserve sits – provides a buffer from the skyglow of surrounding coastal and urban areas. The accreditation complements the Sunshine Coast’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere.

It covers the townships of Maleny, Mapleton, Montville, Witta, Flaxton, Kenilworth and Conondale, as well as local conservation areas across the Blackall Range.

Sunshine Coast Stargazing has launched a small group 90-minute experience that blends astronomy, astrophotography and storytelling. Participants can discover distant planets, star clusters and galaxies through high powered telescopes and a laser-guided night-sky tour led by Nate and Kavita Eikenbary. The A$160 per person experience includes tea, coffee and treats and a take-home gift.

Stargazing is also part of the two-night Starstruck package being offered by Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat. It includes daily breakfast, a bottle of sparkling wine, a local cheese platter and a gourmet BBQ hamper. The following day, a gourmet picnic pack is provided so that guests can explore waterfalls, rainforest walks and scenic villages. Packages are available for A$2100 per couple.

The Magical Dome at Petrichor Estate offers uninterrupted views of the night sky from the comfort of a bed. Designed for a sunset to sunrise stay, the dome features a king-size bed, reverse cycle air conditioning, a separate private bathroom, deck, magnesium sunken spa, and firepit.
