That is the message from Candy Roberts of Broome and Around and Rebecca Penegar of Broome Adventure Cruises, who are presenting at a shared booth during the Australian Tourism Exchange this week. They say that between them the offer the best of land and sea in Broome and its surrounds.
Roberts’ company offers (among other tours) a Discover Broome excursion which she says is perfect for people who get off a ship and need an orientation of the town and area. ‘We can show them where can get half price oysters on the wharf and we can point out Matsos brewery where they can go for a famous alcoholic ginger beer. Our guests also see the landscapes and hear about the pealing history in the region.’
Discover Broome has a number of other options including a visit to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Refuge – home to some 400 crocodiles, with 200 of them being four metres plus.
Penegar says that a pre or post cruise experience in Broome gives agents opportunities for extra commission.
‘We offer half day cruising around Roebuck Bay and our shallow draft means we can get close to the shore and into places like Dampier Creek. We can visit a sacred Yawaru beach where the elders invite our passe
ngers to partake in a spiritual cleansing ceremony.’
She cites the Ramsar Wetlands with its incredible birdlife, as a highlight in the region. ‘March to November are peak season but wader birds can be seen all year round.
Dinosaur experiences (there are 21 different types of dinosaur footprints in the region) and the chance to see snubfin dolphins as other are other options .
