Amphibious Magnetic Island

Paul and Clare Ley Paul and Clare Ley

Sailing boat operator Pilgrim Magnetic Island is adding a Smuggler amphibian vehicle to its fleet, making beach access more accessible to people with mobility issues.

Owners Paul and Clare Ley say the vehicle, which drives into the sea, will allow people to easily land on beaches around the island for a picnic and time to relax.
They point out Magnetic Island has 23 beaches and only about five are accessible by road.

The Pilgrim sailing has two main offers – a four-hour day experience and a one and a half hour sunset cruise. The emphasis is on the sailing, with food and beverage and (during the day) a swim, whereas the Smuggler will be more about time on the beaches.
Magnetic island is 20 minutes by ferry from Townsville
