Sunshine Coast: Growing Kiwi market a top priority

Attracting more New Zealanders to the Sunshine Coast remains a top priority for the region and alerting the trade to the myriad of opportunities there is a key part of the strategy, says Matt Stoeckel, CEO at Visit Sunshine Coast.

‘When we talk about our international market the emphasis is really on New Zealand. I think the great attraction when compared to South Pacific destinations is that we not only have the resort option (which they do extremely well) but we can also offer serviced apartments that suit people who are on more of a budget. It perfectly suits those who want a more self-sufficient holiday.

‘We had 72,000 Kiwis visit in the last calendar year and we’d really like that to grow to around 90,000,’ says Stoeckel. ‘A key part or our messaging is around the direct Jetstar service to Maroochydore year round, and the seasonal Air New Zealand flights over winter.’
He says another important theme is that Sunshine Coast is more than just beaches.

‘We’ve got the Glasshouse Mountains, whale experiences, food and drink, plus culture and a relaxed welcoming way of life. We find that when New Zealanders discover us they often come back multiple times, so it’s a destination that agents can package up to include various locations – the hinterland, Caloundra, Noosa, Rainbow beach and more.’

He says new inventory is coming on line all of the time.
‘Avani Mooloolaba Beach just opened this week with 180 rooms and I think that’s another nice fit for Kiwis.’
