Meryl Eddie, business and product manager at Boobook, is also challenging the perception that outback attractions are always spread out and require long travel distances between attractions.
‘Roma is an hour’s flight from Brisbane or a five-hour drive and it is the gateway to the Carnarvon Ranges. We’ve got a diverse ecological and agricultural environment – spectacular night skies, rainforest, open plains, cattle industry and thousands of years of Indigenous history along with early settler traditions.’
Boobook has a range of tours but Eddie emphasises that the company can organise one-off, private programmes for clients seeking something special. ‘We can get to places and on to properties that nobody else can access, so guests can meet the owners, experience the local food and hear the stories of the region.’
Eddie says Roma and its surrounds provide a different kind of relaxation in Queensland.
‘We know that New Zealanders like to do the coastal flop and drop, but you can flop and drop in outback too. We’ve got camping and glamping, big open skies and landscapes, gum trees and wildlife. Kiwis always love it when they visit and we’re not actually too far away.’
She says time poor customers could experience the region in two nights, but recommends a stay of three days, four nights.
