Berkeley basecamp

Travel agents have a number of good reasons to recommend Berkely as a base for clients visiting San Francisco and beyond, says Dan Merengo, director of marketing and communication at Visit Berkeley.

‘When people stay in Berkeley they are only 20 minutes from the centre of San Francisco by BART (subway) but the rates are typically 25% lower for the same standard of room.’

He says a good tip for agents was to recommend not renting a car at the airport, but taking the BART to Berkeley and picking up the car there.

‘It is cheaper because there are no airport charges to pay and all iof the major car rentals are in Berkeley. From there it is easy to explore – Sonoma and Napa wine country is only an hour away. If clients want to explore the region and visit Yosemite and Tahoe they have a good head start.’

He says being a major university town means Berkeley has a strong culinary offering, nightlife and art scene.

‘We’ve got an interactive science museum, the Botanical Gardens operated by UC Berkeley and a regional park nearby with a golf course, vintage carousel and a steam train.’
