Nevada road not so lonely

Nevada’s Loneliest Road in America is marking the 40th anniversary of receiving its famous moniker and encouraging New Zealand travellers to discover the famous self-drive adventure.

In 1986, Life magazine dubbed Nevada’s Highway 50 the Loneliest Road in America, warning there were few points of interest along the route and suggesting only travellers with strong survival skills should attempt the journey. Four decades later, the road has earned an entirely different reputation and is now one of the USA’s most rewarding self-drive experiences.

Stretching more than 640 kilometres across the heart of the Silver State, the route links historic mining towns, ghostly relics, dramatic mountain ranges, dark skies, natural hot springs, prehistoric fossils, wildlife refuges and authentic Sagebrush Saloons. Far from being empty, the route offers an unforgettable journey through some of Nevada’s rich history, spectacular landscapes and American experiences.

Road-trip highlights include Churchill County Museum & Archives, Fallon; the Monster Burger challenge at Middlegate Station and the Shoe Tree near the station; Oats Park Art Center,  plus Sand Mountain and its ‘singing’ dunes.
