Santa Monica beachside base

Agents are being urged to consider recommending Santa Monica as a base for clients heading to any of the big events in Los Angeles over the next few years.

The beachside city is also a prime spot in its own right for one of the big commemorations next year – the centenary of Route 66.

Simran Mediratta, account manager ANZ for Santa Monica Travel and Tourism, says the destination will be in the spotlight as the official end (or unofficial start) of the historic drive.

‘Anyone who has done the drive can go to one of three visitor centres in Santa Monica and get a certificate of completion,’ she adds.

Kiwis heading to the FIFA World Cup could also consider the relaxed environment of Santa Monica as a base – it’s 15 to 20 minutes drive from SOFI Stadium. The same advice applies for the 2028 Olympics.

‘We’ve got hotels to suit everyone’s budget,’ says Mediratta, ‘from three and four stars through to luxury.’

New properties include Regent Santa Monica – which was a favourite for New Zealand and Australian travellers in its previous life as Loews. Another relatively new choice is Sandbourne Santa Monica, Autograph Collection – which will appeal to clients who wish to avoid a resort fee
