AI plus personal touch a winning formula for trade, independent agents hear
Agents can embrace ChatGTB and other AI developments to their advantage while still providing the personal touch and human interaction that clients value, delegates at the FCTG New Zealand Independent Conference heard late last week.
James Kavanagh, Flight Centre’s CEO leisure, says agents should not be afraid of the technology and should take heed of former predictions of doom.

Clients accepting fees as travel ‘goes nuts’ – transparency the key
Brokers and agents are reporting that a fee-driven structure to their business is being readily accepted by most clients – as long as there is clarity around charges.
Sandra Ivelja, of So Travel and a member of NZ Travel Brokers, says she has a schedule of fees which she emails to customers before any work is done.
TMG brokers reconnect
Travel Managers Group (TMG) had a day (and evening) of reconnection at The Beekeeper’s Wife, north west of Auckland on Friday, with sessions that covered subjects like working in the domestic market and mental health. General manager, Cath Mcleod says the get-together was about reconnecting and ‘reminding people why we are still here, doing what we do.’
In an address to attendees, Mcleod pointed out that broker numbers in the group remained stable – with the number of new members roughly replacing those who had left. ‘We’ve got people here from as far away as Queenstown, Dunedin, Nelson, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Northland amongst other places. It is amazing we can together like this at a time when there is little or no income.’
Mcleod acknowledges that many brokers have taken other jobs while still continuing to service their clients. ‘That’s testament to how much you value your clients and how much they value you. No other industry is sitting in the same position that we’re still in. In March (2020) we were wondering how we would make it through to June. But things will change – we’ll be back selling the travel that we love.’

TMG calls for new brokers with learn and earn opportunity
A partnership announced late last year between Travel Managers Group (TMG), international financial technology business, Ratebroker, and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is opening doors for experienced New Zealand travel brokers so they can get back to earning – this time providing financial advice.
Since launching the partnership in December, TMG brokers have been taking up the training in big numbers, allowing them to earn while they learn.
