Having people deprived of leisure travel for a couple of years, combined with the changing needs of corporates, is likely to lead to increased demand for comfort in the air, says Keith Sumner, managing director of Gilpin Travel.

‘Some of my golf mates, for example, have had two of their golden years of travel stolen from them. A lot of people, like them, will want to travel in comfort when they can.’

Sumner and colleague Jamie Gray, sales manager at Gilpin Travel, appeared on The Travel Guys TV show with presenter Mike Hogan recently and discussed ongoing challenges, trends and predictions in the business travel sphere.

Niue looks to Q4

Signs are promising that Niue will open to New Zealand quarantine-free in the fourth quarter of this year, according to the chair of the Pacific Island nation’s Tourism Advisory Board, Vanessa Marsh.

Marsh emphasises that a two-way bubble will be dependent on the vaccination roll out in Niue, plus agreement by both governments. However, there is reason to be optimistic with vaccinating expected to start in Niue
in June and take six weeks.

Passing on the golf club

It was somewhat of a swansong for the organiser of the trade’s annual Travel Industry Golf Day on Friday.

After driving the event for 25 years, industry personality Mike Hogan of Hogan & Associates has passed the golf baton (or should we say golf club) to Dennis Payne of House of Travel, Orewa. With temperatures in the late 20s, cold liquid refreshments were sponsored oncourse by TRAVELinc Memo. A sausage sizzle sponsored by Allianz provided pregame sustenance. Steve Woods from Jet Park Hotels won the spot prize of flights to Fiji complete with accommodation courtesy of Fiji Airways, Marriott and Treasure Island.
