Room to work more with agents, say ITOs

Inbound tour operators have expressed a desire to collaborate more with outbound travel agents when it comes to issues around the borders.

The subject was raised during the Tourism Export Council (TEC) NZ conference in New Plymouth recently and chair Scott Mehrtens, of Leisure Time Travel, says it is clear the two sectors can work together and learn from each other.

‘We have made it clear that inbound tour operators are not travel agents because there is some confusion (at a political level). But that doesn’t mean we can’t collaborate on common issues. Our problems are their problems and we can’t have inbound without outbound,’ says Mehrtens.

‘At a CEO level the various associations talk to each other, and at TEC we think we have our own pitch right when talking to government, but we’ll look at what else can be done.’

He says a number of ITOs, including his own company ,are already working closely with agents in the domestic space.
