G founder: set example

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, has urged travel agents to ‘stay away from the front pages’ and give their clients credible information and actual data.

He diverted briefly from a message of making travel a powerful change agent, especially for women around the world and in the audience’s own companies, when he spoke at A Force For Good in Auckland yesterday. While acknowledging the seriousness of the coronavirus, Tip emphasises that only three countries are actually subject to a travel warning right now. ‘That leaves 193 to 197 countries that are fairly safe and low risk travel right now.’ He says he understands why travel companies would cut their non essential travel right now to reduce cost but says the industry should be setting a positive example.

‘As an industry we have to set an example and show people you can travel and its still relatively safe. We have to band together.’ He says the industry still has a way to go with the crisis but does see a silver lining in the seasons. ‘The most effected countries are in the northern hemisphere and flu and other viruses tend to dissipate as the weather gets warmer. In Canada we’ve got Spring coming on in three weeks so hopefully the figures (number of cases) start heading in the right direction.’
