Polar bug...healthy for agents

Having clients who take an Antarctic cruise can form the ‘perfect base’ for repeat sells – particularly for those clients who catch the Polar bug and want to head north, says Sarah Arane, Quark Expeditions’ sales manager for New Zealand.

She says Antarctica has a couple of different journeys that guests can experience, while the Arctic has some seven or eight. ‘The hardest part is choosing which Arctic to do, and that can come down to a choice between polar bears and the Northern Lights. If someone wants to do both, they need to have two trips back to back – or return another time.’ Sydney-based Arane was in New Zealand last week and presented to agents and their clients at a World Journeys-organised function in Auckland. Aerolineas Argentinas and Air Canada were partners in the event. She says agents who can help clients with ‘the where’ choice have plenty of scope to make a lucrative booking and sow the seed for a loyal repeat Polar client. Antarctic cruises start at $10,000 per person and increase from there depending on the comfort and luxury level of the ship. Arctic journeys are ‘easily’ priced at around $30,000 per client. ‘Add flights, and pre and post and we are talking about high value customers. We also find that when a couple books an expedition cruise and tells friends, they then have people who want to join them – so it can become a group booking.’ The night detailed travel experiences through the Falklands, South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland, Spitsbergen, the Russian High Arctic and the North Pole. Northern Canada and Iceland were also featured. Clients who book an Antarctic Quark Expeditions cruise by 30 August 2019 can save up to 30% on selected departures, and up to 20% on selected 2020 Arctic programmes when booked by 30 September. info@worldjourneys.co.nz
