Philippines: More with Kiwi trade

Increasing business to business connections between the Kiwi travel trade and Philippines suppliers remains the key to further success out of this market, according to the Philippine Department of Tourism.

Norj Delos Reyes, the department’s tourism attaché – Australia and New Zealand, says there is an awareness that the destination has to increase its profile and presence here even further. She says the Philippines will host another agents’ mega-famil relatively soon (probably in the first quarter of 2019) and is also planning more media activity. ‘We had a 23.7% increase in Kiwi visitors in 2017 over 2016 (financial year January to December) and we are confident and positive about 2018.

The destination concluded a successful three centre roadshow around the country in Auckland last night, with 100 plus agents, having hosted 60 in Wellington on Wednesday and 30 in Christchurch the night before. James Sy, officer in charge of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, points out this is the first time the country’s roadshow has covered three cities. ‘We are aware we need more product presentation, education and knowledge for the trade here.’ He says getting more traction in the market is essential if the Philippines hopes to increase air connections from the current three flights a week by Philippine Airlines from Auckland to Manila. ‘We have to help them attract more people.’
