Camping with custodians

Two fully serviced commercial campgrounds built and operated by Aboriginal communities have opened at Imintji and Mimbi in the Kimberley region. Tourism Minister Paul Papalia has officially opened the Imintji Campground and the Jarlarloo Riwi Mimbi Campground.

It was the vision of Imintji elder Jack Dale who believed a campground near the community would allow visitors to share country and culture with Aboriginal people as well as provide an income and employment opportunities for the community. The Imintji Campground project won the Public Engagement and Community Planning category at the Planning Institute of Australia’s 2017 National Awards for Planning Excellence.
