near Port Douglas

resurgence in the business events sector, with

excellent delegate numbers already confirmed

for 2017.’

Johnson and others in the region point to the

opening of Hemingway’s Brewery recently as

providing another function space for groups. It

is part of The Reef Marina’s multi-million dollar

refurbishment in Port Douglas and the head

brewer is Jared Stewart, formerly of Moa in

New Zealand.

The brewery’s top floor, named Upstairs@

Hemingway’s, includes a bar and event centre

with views across the marina. The ground

floor has an expansive garden bar and lounge

bar areas.


The A$43 million renovation of Sheraton

Mirage Port Douglas was completed late August

and included the refurbishment of all guest

rooms, suites and public areas. As part of the

upgrade, the resort also introduced 41 Lagoon

Edge Rooms and 12 Lagoon Edge Studio Suites

on the ground floor with private balconies

offering guests views of and direct access to the

resort’s saltwater lagoon swimming pool.

As a conference venue, the resort caters

for events from 20 to 1000 guests. Facilities

include Glade Pavilion, North Queensland’s

largest pillarless conference facility and 17

indoor or outdoor event spaces. There is also

restaurant space dedicated for functions and a

beachside chapel.

The ‘renewal’ of Port Douglas as an incentive and

conference destination will be a major focus of the

Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region during PAICE.

refurbishment has obviously been amajor boost.

There has also been renewed attention on

offsite event capability in the region, along with

a refurbishment of the Quicksilver VIII vessel

and an outer reef platform refurbishment, and

expansion of Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures.
