Pacific Pearl offers agents 'preview cruise'

Hundreds of New Zealand travel agents are due to receive special ‘save the date’ alerts putting them in line to become the first to experience P&O Cruises’ Pacific Pearl when she begins her inaugural Auckland cruise season later this year. Pacific Pearl will be 'shown off' to the travel industry in a two-night ‘shakedown cruise’ on December 19-21. A similar cruise for travel agents on board Pacific Sun in 2005 attracted nearly 750 agents.
The 63,500-tonne Pacific Pearl is 40% bigger than Pacific Sun and its range of first time features include more than 60 balcony cabins. A naming ceremony will welcome the Pacific Pearl to the P&O Cruises’ fleet when it returns from the preview cruise.

The New Zealand and Asian hosted buyers at Destination South Australia used The Novotel Barossa Valley Resort as a base during the pre-event familiarisation tour. Enjoying the fresh Barossa air are Ian Yee and Elesha Crowe, of HOT Events; with Samantha Eitzen (centre) of Novotel Barossa Valley Resort.

A fine drop
Image  Assistant wine maker Liz Maxwell displays her carefully blended wine after a quick lesson at Penfolds in the Barossa Valley. Rumour has it that Maxwell's day job is as an incentive organiser based in Christchurch, which explains why she joined a group of incentive and conference organisers on a pre Destination South Australia famil. As well as the visit to Penfolds, the New Zealand and Asian organisers visited Wolf Blass and Saltram Wine Estate (with lunch at Salter's Restaurant).

Kiwis at market
Image Some of the New Zealand delegates at Destination South Australia visited the Adelaide Central Markets for a quick tour before heading to the new Crowne Plaza Adelaide for lunch. There was a familiar face at the hotel - general manager Brendan Meppem has recently done stints at the Crowne Plaza Auckland and (before that) Duxton Okawa Bay, Rotorua. Destination SA is from July 20 to 23 and for the New Zealand delegates includes a visit to Barossa Valley (complete with balloon tour) as well as the trade day on Friday July 23. Tasmania has launched a programme designed to encourage locals to help attract business events to the state. 'We are asking those Tasmanians that know of a conference, corporate meeting, incentive, seminar or exhibition, currently held elsewhere, to initiate that event to be hosted in Tasmania,' says Business Events Tasmania chief executive officer Stuart Nettlefold. The catalyst program was launched by Tasmania's Minister for Tourism, Michelle O'Byrne at Hobart Function and Conference Centre on July 19. The programme has its own patron, journalist Charles Wooley, and will also have industry leaders in fields that Tasmania excels in as ambassadors. Nettlefold says ambassadors have been approached to represent the State in agriculture, aquaculture, the Antarctic sector, arts and culture, finance and economics, innovation, maritime, medical research, tourism and events, forestry, sport and recreation, and education.

'In the 2009/10 financial year Business Events Tasmania won 106 bids for business events, valued at over $31 million. This is up 56% on the year before and we intend to win even more business in 2010/11 - particularly with the help of our local champions.'

TRAVELinc's August issue will include a Tasmanian supplement covering incentives, corporate retreats and high end leisure products in the State. Sister magazine Meeting Newz will run a preview in November of the Professional Conference Organisers (PCO) Association's early December conference in Hobart.
