Emirates set to expand NZ service
Emirates will boost capacity on its Auckland-Melbourne-Dubai service from Monday, August 2 with a change of aircraft type on the route. The airline will replace the current Airbus A340-500 operation with the latest Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, complete with new lie-flat business class seating and private suites in first class, as well as 1,200 channels of on-screen information communication and entertainment. The change will mean an extra 672 seats per week being available in each direction.
'We are keenly awaiting the extra capacity and aircraft upgrade,' says Emirates New Zealand manager Chris Lethbridge. 'We have been experiencing very high load factors for some time and forward bookings are strong. The larger aircraft will be particularly welcome in a few months time when large numbers of New Zealanders are looking to attend the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington, the 150th running of the race.'
He says the same aircraft switch would occur at the end of the year on the Auckland-Brisbane-Dubai route. Emirates’ other Auckland service, via Sydney to Dubai, is operated by an Airbus A380 superjumbo.
The Boeing 777-300ER will operate in a three class configuration with eight first class, 42 business class and 304 economy class seats. The aircraft type already operates on Emirates daily service out of Christchurch. Emirates recently announced that it had ordered a further 30 Boeing 777-300ERs, in addition to the 71 it has in service or previously ordered.

Thailand holds up despite difficulties
In spite of the sharp declines in arrivals during the political crisis months of May and June 2010, international visitor arrivals to Thailand in the first four months of this year were still high enough to give the country a 13.70% increase in total arrivals in the first half. Figures tabulated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in January-June 2010, showed total arrivals by nationality of 7,515,025 up from 6,609,313 or up 13.70%. This is because arrivals in the first half of 2009 had been hit by the impact of the global financial and economic crisis prevailing at the time, making this year’s rate of increase relatively high over a low base figure. It also reflects the fact that while arrivals to Bangkok were significantly affected, arrivals to Phuket remained relatively buoyant. As the arrivals in June and July 2010 have picked up significantly, thanks to the launch of recovery programmes and a broad range of promotional packages, Tourism Authority of Thailand is optimistic that it will still be possible to meet the year’s total arrivals target of 14.5 million arrivals.
